A local assemblyman wants the state attorney general to put a stop to political telemarketing calls. Assemblyman Jeff Van Drew, D-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic, said recorded messages sent within the state are already illegal, but the laws need to be enforced. He also wants to extend the telemarketing ban to political “robocalls” made from out of state. “This last election became insane where people were hearing from local legislators, former presidents and first ladies and I think it rose to the level where it became an invasion of privacy and an abuse of the process,” Van Drew said. Van Drew and Assemblyman Nelson Albano, D-Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic, contacted the state Attorney General's Office on Tuesday to request that it enforce a 1993 law that bans all intrastate pre-recorded messages, except emergency announcements or calls in which a live operator first obtains permission. Under the bill, which has yet to be officially introduced, political phone calls would no longer be exempt from the state's do-not-call list. Van Drew said he also wants to remove the live operator exemption.
