Registrations to the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) rose from 13.5m in the past month to 13.8m, with the Direct Marketing Association predicting that the register will exceed 14m in the new year.
'There are around 300,000 registrations a month. We believe people are signing up because they are receiving silent calls,' says Mike Lordan, the DMA's director of consumer services, compliance and accreditation. 'The TPS is not a service to stop silent calls but consumers think it does.'
MPS 3.2M
There are around half a million mobile numbers registered on the TPS, but the DMA expects this number to increase substantially if the cost of marketing to mobiles is reduced.
'There are around half a million mobile numbers on the TPS. We might see a rise in mobile numbers being registered once people realise they can do so,' said Lordan.
Registrations to the Mailing Preference Service stood at 3.2m. 'The number of sign-ups seems to have slowed, but this can be expected because of the time of year,' said Lordan.
