Texas PUC Proposes No Major Changes to No Call Law

COMMUNICATIONS DAILY

The Texas Public Utility Commission will tell the 2007 state legislature there's no need for major change to the state's no-call telemarketing law because no-call telemarketing complaints have plunged 76% since 2004. In a draft report, up for adoption at the PUC meeting Thurs. (Case 33567), the PUC said it got 3,800 no-call complaints Sept. 2004-Aug. 2006, compared to 13,742 complaints Sept. 2002-Aug. 2004. The Texas no-call law requires the PUC to report to the legislature in Dec. of each even-numbered year on no-call complaint activity. The PUC traced the drop to Oct. 2004 requirements compelling telemarketers to buy the list and to keep for 24 months a record of all numbers called in each telemarketing campaign. It said increased enforcement against no-call violators also has helped improve overall compliance with the no-call law.
