Telemarketer Fined $2.17 Million for Unsolicited Faxes

The FCC will fine a Texas telemarketer $2.17 million for delivering 356 unsolicited ads to consumers by fax, it said. The FCC based its action on 110 consumer complaints against the company, Hot Lead. In warnings last year, the FCC told Hot Lead it could be fined. The company didn't respond and complaints continued, indicating that Hot Lead kept sending unsolicited faxes, the FCC said. The ads were for mortgage financing, health and life insurance, credit and debit card services, interior shutters, custom-logo shirts and sales leads, the FCC said. The fine is $4,500 for each of 253 ads, plus $10,000 for each of 103 faxes sent after targets told Hot Lead to stop. It has 30 days to pay or file an explanation of why the fine should be reduced or cancelled.
