Nearly 400,000 Wisconsin residents have dropped off the state's no-call list and need to sign up by Dec. 1 to get back on it, a state agency said this week.
There have been as many as 1.5 million telephone numbers on the list, but that number has fallen to 1.1 million, said the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection's Bureau of Consumer Protection.
Most people don't realize they must sign up every two years or they drop off the list, said Jim Rabbitt, the bureau's director. He suggested people sign up every year on their birthday, so they don't forget.
Rabbitt also said the law allows families, caregivers, nursing homes, hospitals, institutions and associations for the elderly to put people in their care on the no-call list.
The Wisconsin list went into effect in January 2003. The updated no-call list is given to registered telemarketers quarterly.
Consumers can get on the list by calling toll-free 1-866-9NO-CALL (1-866-966-2255) or by going to the Web site https://nocall.wisconsin.gov.
